DIVORCE OR SEPARATION
Divorced or separated? Your health coverage may need to change.
A divorce or separation can change who is in your household and what you qualify for. MinnAssist helps you update your coverage or get your own coverage, by phone. Call MinnAssist at (866) 655-6606.
How MinnAssist helps
- We help you report the change to the state.
- We check what you and your children qualify for now.
- Losing coverage through a spouse may let you pick an MNsure plan outside open enrollment. We check.
- We explain the letters that follow.
- Free, 9 am to 9 pm, 7 days.
What to have ready
- Any letters you got from MNsure, DHS or your county.
- Your income, like recent pay stubs, if you have them.
- Names and birth dates for the people in your home.
- Missing something? Call anyway. We tell you what's needed and help you get it.
If you'd rather do it yourself
You can. Apply or renew at mnsure.org or through your county human services office. MinnAssist is an independent navigator organization, not MNsure, DHS or your county. If you'd like a person to do it with you, call us. It's free.
Common questions
- Should I do this on my own, or call MinnAssist?
- You're not alone. In 2026, 184,963 Minnesotans lost Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare at renewal, and 86% of them lost it over paperwork, not because they stopped qualifying (Minnesota DHS renewal data, see our renewal tracker). Don't be one of them. A MinnAssist navigator does the forms with you by phone, in your language, 9 am to 9 pm, 7 days, and follows up until it's done. Free. Call (866) 655-6606.
- I lost coverage through my ex. What now?
- Call us. We check Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and MNsure plans for you.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Our help is always free, for you and everyone in your family.
