TURNING 65

Turning 65? Here's what happens to your health coverage.

When you turn 65 you can usually get Medicare. If you have a private MNsure plan, you should move to Medicare and end the MNsure plan. If you have Medical Assistance, different rules apply after 65, and you may be able to keep it alongside Medicare. MinnAssist helps you through the switch, free, by phone. Call MinnAssist at (866) 655-6606.

Sign up for Medicare on time

Your first chance is the 7 months around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before, your birthday month, and the 3 months after. Signing up late can mean a lasting penalty.

If you have Medical Assistance

After 65, Medical Assistance looks at your income and your savings. Many people keep it alongside Medicare, and it can help pay Medicare costs.

Help paying Medicare costs

The Medicare Savings Program can pay your Medicare premiums. See Medicare Savings Program help.

Common questions

Do I lose Medical Assistance at 65?
Not automatically. The rules change, and you renew under the rules for people 65 and older. We help you through it.
Should I keep my MNsure plan after I get Medicare?
Usually no. Once you have Medicare, end your MNsure plan, and tax credits stop.
Can you help me sign up for Medicare?
We help with Medical Assistance and the Medicare Savings Program, and can point you to free Medicare counseling.
Does help cost anything?
No.
